A New Look at a Classic: WILD WEST C.O.W.-BOYS OF MOO MESA #1
On September 17th, the C.O.W.-Boys are back for an all-new showdown, courtesy of writer Matt Hotson (known for his work on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return) and blockbuster artist Juan Gedeon (DC: The Jurassic League). This series takes us back to the beginning, exploring the earliest days of Marshal Moo Montana before he even wore the badge. The story plunges us into the lawless border town of Moo Mesa, a place gripped by fear and uncertainty. Citizens are mysteriously disappearing, including Moo’s own mentor, Sheriff Marey Quine. This setup creates a compelling mystery right from the start.
As shadows loom over the mesa, Moo must navigate old grudges and forge new alliances. The plot hints at a conspiracy with deep roots in the mesa’s past, promising a story with layers and intrigue. This isn’t just a simple reboot; it’s a re-imagining. The series brings together the nostalgic charm of the original cartoon with a gritty, pistol-slinging new vision. We will follow Moo Montana, Dakota Dude, Cowlorado Kid, and the formidable Cowlamity Kate on a saga of justice, mystery, and redemption. This is Moo Mesa as you have never seen it before—deeper, more daring, and ready for a new generation. We are incredibly excited to see what Oni Press has in store.
Writer Matt Hotson expressed his excitement, stating, “Giddy-up for a classic wild west tail – er, I mean TALE – set in the earliest days of the Nacelleverse. We’re digging deep into the history of Marshal Moo Montana, and the case which first brings him to CowTown.” He also teased the formation of the C.O.W.-Boys and the introduction of their first anthropomorphic adversary, connecting it all back to the COWmet that created Moo Mesa.
Artist Juan Gedeon shared his personal connection to the series. “I loved Moo Mesa as a kid—Dakota Dude was my favorite! The heroes looked badass but still kind, which I found awesome.” Gedeon’s enthusiasm is infectious. He aims to create a book that appeals to both lifelong fans and newcomers, capturing the heart of the original while leveling it up. The preview art, including some incredible comic book covers, showcases a dynamic and fresh take on these iconic characters.
This marks the first time in over 30 years that the C.O.W.-Boys have ridden into an all-new escapade, and the creative team is pulling out all the stops. The main cover is by Juan Gedeon, with a herd of variant covers from talented artists like Andrew Krahnke, Joe Palmer, Gavin Smith, and Patrick Spaziante. The team behind this book is stacked with talent. The full creative roster includes:
- Writer: Matt Hotson
